The Boy at the Back of the Class

by Onjali Q Raúf

A boy befriends a refugee who has started in his class at school and helps him settle into his new life in the UK. There used to be an empty chair at the back of my class, but now a new boy called Ahmet is sitting in it.

He’s nine years old (just like me), but he’s very strange. He never talks and never smiles and doesn’t like sweets – not even lemon sherbets, which are my favourite!  But then I learned the truth: Ahmet really isn’t very strange at all, he’s a refugee who’s run away from a War. A real one, with bombs and fires and bullies that hurt people. The more I find out about him, the more I want to help. That’s where my best friends Josie, Michael and Tom come in. Because you see, together we’ve come up with a plan. . .

Told with heart and humour, The Boy at the Back of the Class is a child’s perspective on the refugee crisis, highlighting the importance of friendship and kindness in a world that doesn’t always make sense.

I loved this book! It is defiantly the best book I have read so far. My favourite character was Ahmet because he was very brave and even though his sister was dead, he was separated from his parents, he was in a different country and couldn’t speak English he still didn’t give up hope. He never cried and he just got on with his life! I did not think the great plan would work however it did. I loved he ending, it was very emotional but the author was very good at making it seem realistic at the same time.… Read more »

This was a great book and it was hard to put it down it was a great story about friends doing anything for each other.I feel sorry for refugees because they have life so bad.If I was running from a war and my sister had just drowned at sea i would just want to live under my covers and slowly fade away. I give credit to the author because this book is great and makes children understand just how tough it is for these people. Erin 11

I stoped reading this book near the end because ,I got a bit board of it because it was talking about the same stuff all of the time.At the start i really liked the book but then it said about that his dad had died. But at the start i was really intrested in the book and then it got a bit boaring. I totally recommend this book to people who like advenchers. GS
