Spellbinding, the name given to Cumbria’s secondary school Book Award, sees hundreds of pupils each year read their way through ten shortlisted titles, this year chosen in partnership with students and librarians from 7 of our local schools.
The award creates an enthusiasm about books and reading for pleasure, as well as giving students the opportunity to try new authors and genres. Students can post comments and thoughts on the books via the website, sharing their views with students across Cumbria, as well as voting for their favourite.
Students and staff from all participating schools are invited to our annual Awards Day where the winning title and author is announced. This is a very exciting day where schools come together to celebrate the books they have read, take part in competitions and activities, and, for the first time this year, meet and chat with some of the shortlisted authors.
The award is launched at the beginning of the spring term, participating schools are asked to vote after the Easter holidays and the awards day is held in June.
