Jake Atlas and the Tomb of the Emerald Snake

by Rob Lloyd Jones

In a nutshell: two kids on a death-defying treasure hunt through Egypt’s ancient monuments.

Adventure stories don’t come more action-packed than the exploits of Jake Atlas. As the book opens, the Atlas family are about to fly off to Egypt on a working holiday (Mum and Dad are Egyptologists) and the family tension is so strong you can almost hear it twang. Tension of a different kind quickly racks up when Jake’s parents are kidnapped.

To save them he and his twin sister Pandora team up with a couple of unscrupulous if well-equipped tomb robbers. After years of academic failure Jake can finally use his true talents, dodging explosions, outthinking the bad guys, even wrestling a giant snake.

It’s great fun, the Egyptian settings giving it an extra edge and the developing relationship between Jake and Pan (and latterly their parents who’ve been keeping secrets of their own) gives it a cool credibility too.

I think this book is going to be my favourite because it is very interesting. It all starts when they are all going on holiday and then Jake steals a tablet. He is out of the shop and has to be on the plane in 5 minutes and then that’s where it gets interesting! I would definitely recommend this book to you all. I personally think the best part of the book is where Jake and Pandora realise their mum is trained in Ju-jitsu etc. It is also really funny and exciting.

I really liked this book because it is funny, adventurous and un predictable. What I mean by this is that I would think the book would go the way I was thinking it would go, but it did the complete opposite. Jake’s mum being a trained fighter instead of a history lover/lecturer, for instance. Pandora became kind and non Goth like and liked to talk about Egypt because she was smart and big brained, she can also shoot a gun very well. Jake on the other hand was not vey intellectual. He didn’t do well at school but he wasn’t… Read more »

This wasn’t one of my favorites but it was still good and i loved all the gadgets and spy things which they used. My favorite character was Jake because he had light fingers and was just over all amazing. I would rate this 7.8/10

Jake Atlas is an adventure book so I really enjoyed it. My favourite part is when Jake and Pandora find out who there Mum really is, because it reveals that she has had an exciting life, not just a boring one. I would recommend this book to people aged 7 and upwards.

Tom: This Jake Atlas book has been very boring for me, because its basically about stealing and tombs. I got one third of the way through and found it very boring. The only bit in the book that i found funny and liked was where Jake and Pan got trapped in the lift; that’s the only bit i found funny. And if your wanting to know why I didn’t like it was because i’m not that interested in Tomb Robbers, stealing and robbery; so i didn’t like it as much as I thought I would like it. I would give… Read more »

This book was ok at the start but then got slightly better but still wasn’t the best. Once I got to the end I found it better. I would recommend to my friends who love adventure and other people who do as well. I would give this book a 3 out of 5
